After the downhill trainings on Wednesday and Thursday, the Norwegian Aksel Lund Svindal was the favourite for the Super-G and the downhill race in Gröden. The slope was in good shape. There wasn’t much snow so there were a lot of bumps and changes. Aksel Lund Svindal coped best with these conditions. He won before the two Italians Matteo Marsaglia and Werner Heel. For the downhill race on Saturday, the weather forecast wasn’t too good. Snowfall and strong wind were predicted. The start repeatedly had to be postponed. Due to the heavy snowfall, the leg was shortened.

After the races overseas, Aspen and Lake Louise, the World Cup continues in Europe. In the beautifully snowy St. Moritz, Switzerland, three races were held. A Super Combination, a Super-G and a giant slalom. The host and his helpers did everything to prepare a perfect piste in spite of the difficult weather conditions with snowfall and strong wind.

This weekend, the sprinters visited Quebec, Canada. The event started with the team sprint in front of the parliament building.

The local hero and world champion Alex Harvey started vividly into the race together with his partner Devon Kershaw. They demonstrated their fitness to the euphoric domestic audience. The two were however stopped by a fall. The Kasakh and the Russion team profited from the fall and showed a dramatic finisch. Only after closely watching the film, the Kasakh relay was declared the winner. It was their first victory in a team sprint. Norway came in third.

After yesterday’s sprint for the Nordic Opening and Mini Tour, today the individual freestyle race was held. Marit Björgen predominated the women’s race and stays unbeaten this winter. The American sprinter Kikkan Randall proves stronger and stronger in the long distance races. She came in on second place before the Russian Yulia Tchekaleva.

Alexander Legkov won the men’s race over 10 km. On the very hard leg and in icy temperatures, he took home the victory before Petter Nothug and Maurice Manificat.
