Langlauf World Cup Nove Mesto

Sunday, 02/12/2012

All favorites for the Overall World Cup met at Nove Mesto na Morave in the Czech Republic. The leg is predestined for the classic technique. The race on its 15 km (women) and 30 km (men) distance was not just about the day victory but also about taking another step towards the Overall World Cup. Justina Kowalczyk’s performance was very strong and she already started with a high speed with which only the two Norwegians Marit Björgen and Therese Johaug could keep up. Johaug had to give in on the last kilometers so that only Björgen and Kowalczyk came into question for the victory. Björgen was strong in her downhill performance and could build up for the home stretch. She won the final spurt before Justina Kolwalczyk. Thus, the suspense in the battle for the grand trophy continues.

In the men’s race, the Swedish team proved very active and saw to a high speed. 10 km before the end of the race, Johan Olsson pushed the speed again. This made Dario Cologna leave the leading group to dash off together with Olsson. After that, the Russian team tried in vain to fill the gap. Cologna proved his abilities but lost contact to Olsson on the downhill leg to the finish. Although he made a big effort, he did not manage to catch up with him again. Johan Olsson jumped at the opportunity and took home the victory. Cologna had to put up with 2nd place which nevertheless brings him a fair advantage for the Overall World Cup. 3rd place went to Maxim Vylegzhanin/RUS who won before two of his team colleagues on the final spurt.
